ABOUT US
BEAUTY IS FOR EVERYBODY…..
OUR STORY
Luminafrik, as the slogan goes "embracing Africa’s glow", began when I couldn’t get any moisturizer that compared to the raw unrefined Shea butter that we grew up using and that is being pass down to our children.
As a child, I experienced a severe skin condition that left a lasting impact on both my skin and my self-confidence. My skin would erupt in a fluid-filled rashes, resembling burns from hot water. These painful blisters would eventually burst on their own, leaving open wounds across my body. The discomfort was so intense that I couldn’t wear regular cloths, fabric would cling to my skin, causing even more pain.
This wasn’t a short phase; it lasted for a significant part of my early life. My daily routine became a healing ritual, using a blend of natural herbs and a small amount of African Black Soap. I would soak in this mixture, hoping for some relief. Over time the wounds began to heal, but they left behind dry, scaly patches and visible scars.
Through it all, my mother relied on one remedy above all others—pure African Shea Butter. She gently applied it every day, trusting in its natural power to soothe, nourish, and to restore my skin.
In our Ewe tribe it is believed that a twin mother or father is the best person to massage you if you have stiff muscles, or if you fracture any part of your body or even a broken leg or arm, and my parents happened to be the ones to help people who are in such conditions and they did that with the almighty Shea butter. If you had a cough, she will slightly warm a teaspoon of the Shea butter for you as a cough syrup, if you had headache, body temperature she will mix it up with vapor rub smear it all over the body from head to toe. Itchy skin, dryness in your nostrils, chipped lips she’ll tell you to “ze yorkumi” a day never went by without using Shea butter in our household. (Yorkumi is the Ewe name for shea butter in my local dialect).
Another natural product my parents never over looked and always made sure we used was our African black soap. This black soap was and is the only bathing soap we knew growing up as kids and that treated most of our skin conditions as a result of sometimes playing in an unclean environment.
As I learned from my parents, my childhood experiences, my grandmother and my continuation in exploring the benefits of Shea butter and other natural ingredients Mother Nature has blessed us with, and the struggles I had with my skincare as I traveled out, laid the foundation of Luminafrik.
Today, Luminafrik stands as a tribute to that journey—rooted in heritage, healing, and the time honored ingredients that natured me back to health.
